I WAS DISTURBED on a number of accounts that morning. The way Virginia talked to Chase and Dinah was a big one, and maybe I shouldnât have expected anything better, but her recovery from her stroke hadnât changed her venomous treatment of me. That came from a grudge I supposed sheâd never get past. My daddy had cheated on her with her own daughter, and in Virginiaâs eyes, Iâd always be a reminder of that indignity.
But I was also out of sorts because my daddy hadnât told me sheâd recovered. When I visited him in DC, he implied she was in bad shape and under the care of a live-in nurse. He couldâve warned me she was back to her usual self. Unless he didnât know. It seemed like something he shouldâve known, but heâd been living in DC for the past five months. I had a lot of things to sort out with him.
I had a talk with the kids about what happened. They were both shaken up in their own way, and I probably didnât need to tell them they couldnât be throwing around balls on the second floor ever again. I also told them Virginia was an evil woman who spouted nonsense, and they should never take to heart anything she said. I made them each give me a nod to let me know they understood, and then I sent them off to get ready for their trips to school.
Not long after they headed out, I got a call from Margaret. Iâd never called her back, though I figured Rafe had filled her in on my status yesterday. I picked her up and let her know I hadnât been swarmed by reporters with the exception of that photographer yesterday morning. Then Margaret eased in to the latest developments on her end.
Sheâd gotten some calls about the National Enquirer article. Not from any respectable news outlets. The New York Post was running a short piece about it along with The Daily Mail in the UK. Her most troubling call was from a producer at the Maury Povich Show. Apparently, they had Dolly and her husband, Bobby, coming to their studio on Monday, and they had invited me to tell my side of the story.
I needed no convincing that was a bad idea. I couldnât believe Dolly had the nerve to keep running with her BS. Margaret said sheâd drafted a short statement disavowing Dollyâs allegation that Iâd coerced her to relinquish custody of Dinah. She wanted to fax it to me so I could look it over prior to sending it out to her contacts. I gave her my daddyâs fax number, and we said goodbye.
I felt like I was living in a nightmare again. My name was being dragged through the mud, this time by my own stepsister. As well as Dinah had taken things so far, sheâd be getting another round of attention when that sensationalized daytime program came out on Monday.
Well, I had no choice but to set that aside and try to focus on keeping things normal for the kids.
